4/2/2023 0 Comments Card shark vs card sharpI will be keen to learn more tricks and schemes when Card Shark comes out on June 2nd on PC and Nintendo Switch. Interesting!Īll up, I played about 6 hours of Card Shark before reaching the end of the preview - it would have been less, but I got stuck on one of the more advanced schemes and lost all my hard-hustled gold. There are even certain circumstances where it seems you can actually die if you play your hand poorly. Despite the short time I had with the preview, things escalated quickly and the protagonist was thrust into more actual danger than I expected. Although at first your mentor’s goal appears just to be getting rich, it soon becomes clear that he is chasing a secret of some sort. He gets taken under the wing of the tricky Comte de Saint-Germain, who teaches him the art of cheating at cards. The protagonist is a youth who can’t talk, who starts the game waiting tables at a run-of-the-mill tavern. The game is set in 18th century France, with all of the ruffles, frills, and hoity-toity characters to match. I imagined rooms of nameless aristocrats falling prey to my various schemes, and my riches growing and I hone my craft. The story of Cark Shark surprised me, primarily because I didn’t truly expect it to have one at all. The 2D animation is like what you’d see in a puppet show. I absolutely love the art style, which is the spitting image of medieval drawings and tapestries of the Medieval era. While it seems a simple premise, the look and feel of the game are absolutely selling it so far. However, I’m a little wary of the control scheme, which seems unwieldy in some circumstances. When you pull off the scam, though, it’s pretty satisfying indeed. There are always multiple things you need to pay attention to, and it’s not hard to let something slip your attention. You’ll be the one tricked out of 20 bucks. The goal is to win your hand, of course, but if you peep at your opponent’s cards too long or mess up a button prompt, your opponent could realise you’re a cheat and you’ll have to suffer the consequences. You’ve been warned: Card Shark won’t teach you to becoming a hustler. Frankly, it’s more a visual novel hiding its chapters behind frustrating and poorly designed minigames. It’s ironic that for a bunch of people selling you that you’re going to play a card shark, they’re the ones pulling the con. I’m even more upset by the fact that the developers and the publisher presented this game as a truly unique, innovative gameplay, which is flat out a lie. The bottom line is that I can’t recommend Card Shark. You never get to develop better skills either, as you only encounter a trick once anyway, so there’s no point in even trying to get better at them, if that was possible. Your successes or failures don’t impact the plot in any way, which makes the game feel even more pointless. Which brings me to another issue: there’s no connection between the gameplay and the story. The phrase is also spelled card-sharp and cardsharp. A sharp is an expert, but the noun phrase card sharp means not just an expert, but a cheat. So the experience becomes very quickly a chore, and the developers knew this, since they allow you to simply skip the gameplay after a while, and move on with the story. A card sharp is someone who makes money playing card games such as poker. You often fail not because of a lack of skill, but because of a clunky design. What’s worse, the game makes a very poor job at explaining the tricks, which become increasingly annoying. And if you fail at any point during the sequence, you start over. You’re taught to press certain buttons in a certain order, remember how many cards of a certain color came out, or rotate the pad in a circular motion when a card is drawn, among other very basic and annoying gimmicks. The cards are only a theme, a background, for mechanics that have barely anything to do with an actual card game. If you think that you’re going to actually play card hands, that’s not it. However under the hood hides nothing more than a succession of very frustrating QuickTime events: mini games in which you must remember a series of button presses or controller inputs with very unforgiving precision. It’s true that the theme and the art direction both have undeniable appeal. Unfortunately, as it is often the case, the disappointment matched the expectations. Unfortunately, as it is Considering that Card Shark comes from the same people who made the excellent Reigns, I had high hopes for this game.
